Nepal faces worst cholera outbreak since 2009, three Dead in Birgunj

Birgunj (Nepal), August 28 (ANI): The Parsa district of Nepal which borders India, a surge of cholera cases has been reported over the past week. The outbreak has already claimed three lives and led to the hospitalization of more than a hundred people, several of whom are in critical condition. Health officials suspect that the prolonged drought in the country’s southern plains may have triggered the epidemic. Since last Friday, hospitals in Birgunj Metropolitan City have been receiving large numbers of patients suffering from severe diarrhea, many of whom have tested positive for cholera in rapid diagnostic tests. Cholera cases have spread across wards 3, 11, 12, 13, and 16 of Birgunj Metropolitan City, with Narayani Hospital reporting eight patients in critical condition due to kidney failure from severe dehydration. Cholera, a highly infectious disease, can cause death within hours if untreated. Nepal frequently faces such outbreaks during the monsoon, as floodwaters contaminate drinking water sources.
