Nepal’s ruling and opposition lawmakers seeks clarity from PM Oli on China’s GSI

Description: Kathmandu (Nepal), Sep 03 (ANI): Lawmakers from both Nepal’s ruling and opposition parties have called on Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli to explain China’s claim that Nepal has agreed to join its Global Security Initiative (GSI). During Wednesday’s parliamentary session, members of the ruling Nepali Congress and the opposition Communist Party of Nepal–Unified Socialist urged the Prime Minister to issue a clear statement addressing the assertions made by the Chinese Foreign Ministry. China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli had voiced support for Beijing’s Global Security Initiative (GSI) during his talks with President Xi Jinping. The meeting was held in Tianjin on the sidelines of the 25th Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit and the “SCO Plus” event. However, the Embassy of Nepal in Beijing, in its own statement on the discussions between Oli and Xi, did not refer to any endorsement of the GSI. Kathmandu views the GSI as a security-driven, strategic framework and has emphasized that it cannot align with such blocs at a time of intensifying global multipolar competition.
