UN seeks paths to get goods through the Strait of Hormuz

New York [US], March 29: The United Nations is working on a way for critical goods to be able to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, which has been effectively blocked due to the Iran war.
The initial aim is to facilitate trade in fertilizers and agricultural products, a spokesman for UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said on Friday in New York. The focus is on humanitarian needs. It is not about the trade in oil, the spokesman stressed, adding that the specific details of the mechanism have not yet been finalized.
Iran's UN ambassador in Geneva, Ali Bahreini, suggested that there could be concessions regarding the transport of certain goods through the strait.
"Iran has decided to facilitate and further expedite the safe passage of humanitarian shipments through the Strait of Hormuz," Bahreini wrote on X.
"The operational arrangements for implementation will be finalized with the United Nations in due course," he added.
Iran remained committed to "ensuring, maintaining, and safeguarding the security and stability of the Strait for all non-hostile countries."
