The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) discovered the object on the morning of February 12, and monitored it with radar and images throughout the day. According to the US Department of Defense, there is no indication that any civilians were injured or affected by the mission.
"Today, a high-altitude object was detected in US airspace over Lake Huron. NORAD deployed Canadian and US aircraft to investigate and the object was brought down by US aircraft in the air. United States," Canada's Defense Minister Anita Anand said in a statement.
"We fully support this action and we will continue to work with the US and NORAD to protect North America," Anand added.
The shooting down on February 12 came after the US military shot down two other objects, one on February 10 and another on February 11. The moves come more than a week after the US military shot down a large Chinese hot air balloon off the Atlantic Ocean. The chain of events has led to a diplomatic crisis between Washington and Beijing.
It is unclear whether the object that was shot down on February 12 was a balloon or something else.
