Pressure grows on Germans to send Leopard tanks after Poland commits

Brussels [Belgium], January 14: The German government is coming under increasing pressure from several fronts to send its sophisticated Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, after Warsaw committed to sending tanks to help Kiev fight off Moscow's invasion.
Calls are growing from left-leaning members of the European Parliament for German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to ship the sought-after vehicles to the Ukrainian front, while his own party is divided. The latest calls come after a Polish government spokesman said that Warsaw's decision to give Kiev the tanks was made in part to pressure others to step up. So far the Germans aren't budging. At a
parliamentary meeting of Scholz's Social Democratic Party (SPD) on Thursday, lawmakers stuck to an often-held line that diplomacy is best.
"Because we know: Wars are not usually ended on the battlefield," an SPD draft position paper scheduled to be adopted Friday at this year's kick off retreat, read.
