Japan's Takaichi hopes for 'golden age' for security alliance with the US

Tokyo [Japan], October 29: The United States and Japan aim to further strengthen their security alliance as Japan's new Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Tuesday heralded what she hoped would be a "new golden age" in bilateral ties.
Speaking at the start of a summit with US President Donald Trump in Tokyo, Takaichi said the two countries had developed "the greatest alliance in the world" and that together with the US, Japan was ready to contribute to global peace and stability. Trump praised Takaichi, who has been in power for a week, for immediately boosting Japan's military capabilities. "We received your orders for a large amount of new military equipment," Trump said.
Takaichi last week announced plans to raise Japan's defence budget to 2% of gross domestic product (GDP) by March, two years ahead of schedule. She described the security alliance with the United States as a "cornerstone" of Japan's foreign and security policy.
