Jailed for bribing border customs

Singapore, June 1: The Straits Times reported on May 30 that a Chinese student named Sun Tung, 29, was sentenced to four weeks in prison after pleading guilty to attempting to bribe Singapore customs at the Woodlands border crossing with Malaysia.
Previously, on November 23, 2024, customs officers at the border checked the car rented by this international student and entered Singapore from Malaysia. During the inspection, the Chinese international student hid and did not declare a total of 10 packs of cigarettes. When discovered, this person tried to bribe 50 SGD (1 million VND) to the border staff but was refused.
The Corruption Investigation Bureau took over the case and issued an arrest warrant for the above-mentioned international student on December 10, 2024. He was fined SGD 650 (over VND 13 million) for failing to declare the cigarettes he was carrying. The cigarettes were also confiscated at the border gate. When he appeared in court on May 30, the Chinese international student was sentenced to 4 weeks in prison for bribery.
